The Ostrich is the heaviest as well as the largest living bird. They are so heavy, they cannot fly. However, they are the fastest-running birds. An Ostrich has long, powerful legs that can cover great distances. Ostriches can run more than 45 miles per hour and sprint at sustained speeds of 31 miles per hour. Ostriches run when threatened, and their long, powerful legs can be excellent weapons. They can kill a predator, even a lion, with a single kick. 

The Ostrich egg weighs over three pounds and is the world's largest. Only dinosaurs produced larger eggs. The herd's females place their eggs in the dominant hen's nest, though she holds the prominent center place. Each female can determine her eggs, amongst others. The dominant female incubates the eggs by day and the male by night. 

Ostriches swallow small stones to grind their food because they have no teeth. Consequently, an adult Ostrich carries over two pounds of rocks at any time. 

The male Ostrich feathers are used to entice a female Ostrich. To attract females, these males perform wing flaps, courtship dances, and wing bows. In Ostriches, the male's neck glows red when he is ready to mate with his mate, while the female's feathers become silvery.
